Repurposed Billboard Signs

You see them while speeding down the highway. Or maybe you're going too fast to see them? Either way, they could be the perfect repurposed material for your next project. Made to stand up for months or years outside, billboards signs are useful long after their message is forgotten. Reclaiming and reusing billboards, rather than decaying in a landfill for millions of years, just makes sense. Whether you’ve got a landscape project, need temporary roofing, or want a more durable tarp, look no further. These signs have so many other uses, you might just speed to get here (*please obey all traffic laws*). Read on for repurpose ideas, details, and pricing.

Note: Black-backed 10 MIL and 13 MIL signs are most commonly available.  6 MIL, 17 MIL and 20 MIL, and white-backed signs are often not as available.  Please call prior to purchase or visit to check inventory.  Thank you.

WHAT MATERIAL ARE THE BILLBOARDS PRINTED ON?

It is a 3-ply material: Vinyl (PVC) on the outside layers and a denier polyester scrim (mesh) sandwiched between. The mesh allows it to flex under windy conditions and reduces fraying or tearing. There is a UV layer to protect it from sun exposure too. Our strongest vinyl is 20 mil thick. Compared to conventional blue tarps at just 5mil thick, our tarps are over 2 - 4 times thicker!

WHAT SIZES DO YOU HAVE?

The most common billboard size is 14’x48’. We often carry other sizes (10'x22', 10'x36', 12'x24', etc.). Billboard material is often available in several thicknesses: 10mil, 13mil, 17mil & 20mil (1mil = 1/1000th of an inch). Common blue tarps are about 5mil thick. Please email/call to check inventory and prices on our different sizes.

ARE THE BILLBOARDS WATERPROOF? HOW LONG DO THEY LAST?

The PVC material is 100% waterproof, mildew-repellent, and flame retardant. It is designed to withstand Mother Nature’s worst. Besides its thickness, the UV-protective layer gives it extra longevity. This means more years of life than conventional blue tarps bought at the hardware store. Some have used their billboard tarps for 3-5 years!

HOW DO I FASTEN THE TARP DOWN OR HANG IT?

There are pockets/sleeves that run along all four sides of the billboard. This allows you to run pipe, cable or rope through them for even distribution. There are often small notches every few feet along the channel so you can feed a cable, rope, or pipe through; if they're not already there, you can cut them yourself. These signs do not have grommets, but you can easily add them with a kit from the hardware store. You can also use Grip-Clips, staples, or industrial clamps.

WHAT IS THE CONDITION OF THE TARPS?

These retired billboards tarps are in good condition with normal wear expected from outdoor use. We carefully inspect every sign for significant problems, but occasionally small holes are not seen. Minor issues can easily be repaired if necessary with a scrap piece of vinyl and PVC cement glue from the hardware store (Oatey X-15 seems to work best). Some dirt and debris is normal and can be cleaned off with soap & water. All reclaimed materials are sold "As Is" with no express or implied warranty. Please read product descriptions before purchase as all sales are final.

CAN THE BILLBOARDS BE GLUED TOGETHER TO MAKE A CUSTOM SIZE?

Yes! PVC glue works if you want to join them together yourself. It is a great adhesive that will make a watertight chemical weld. This can be found at your local hardware store.

WHAT CAN FORMER BILLBOARDS BE REPURPOSED AS?

They have dozens of uses. Your creativity is the only limit! Here are some suggestions: winter covers for RV’s, boats, and 5th wheel trailers; hay and alfalfa tarps; weed barrier for landscaping; thermal and moisture barriers for gardening; pond, stream or waterfall liner; roofing underlayment (instead of tar paper); general purpose tarps for equipment, lumber or other materials; drop cloth for painting and home projects; sun shade; camping awning or rain cover; rain water capture; giant slip and slide; weed suppressor; or make your own huge sign! WHERE CAN I GET MY REPURPOSED BILLBOARD SIGNS?

Our Repurpose Lab is located at 36 WEST FAYETTE AVE, UNIT 1, SALT LAKE CITY, UT 84101 (970 South, between Main and West Temple). We are available Monday through Friday, 9am to 6pm.

HOW CAN I PAY? WHAT ABOUT VOLUME PURCHASES?

We prefer cash but also accept debit/check cards, and all major credit cards. Please call about discounts on volume purchases and to ensure inventory.  Local sales tax will be applied.

CAN I PICK THE BILLBOARD ADVERTISEMENT OR COLOR I WANT?

The vast majority of available billboard signs are black on the back; white-backed signs are far scarcer, and do command a price premium.  You may request whichever color you prefer, although it is unlikely we will be able to fulfill requests for large amounts of white signs.  We generally DO NOT track what advertisement is printed on them (except for potentially offensive advertisements, which we clearly mark).  Sorry; we will not unfold them to find a particular ad. The printed side is required to be non-visible once installed.

WHY BUY USED BILLBOARDS INSTEAD OF GETTING TARPS AT A STORE?

STRONGER – 2 to 4 times thicker than regular tarps

LONGER-LASTING – Blue tarps disintegrate in the sun and weather within a year. Billboards are made to withstand the elements for years.

BETTER VALUE – You could pay more for a weaker, smaller, thinner, and less durable material, but why would you?

MORE USES – These can be cut to the size you need without compromising their strength or function. Try that with a store bought tarp and you’ll wish you’d bought from us!

HELP THE ENVIRONMENT – This material would otherwise go to the landfill. You help keep our planet greener and prevent one more tarp from being made unnecessarily. Reduce, reuse, repurpose!
